Piloted a 76 Sq Halifax heading for Duisburg, Germany on the night of 26/27 April 1943. Aircraft was damaged in attack by German nightfighter pilot Heinz Vinke. The Halifax crashed into the Carlton Hotel in Amsterdam, the German HQ. Anne Frank, of diary fame, heard the crash from her hideaway house. There was conjecture at the time from the Dutch whether this was done deliberately.
